TETRA Radio Infrastructure — Sicily
Deployment and supervision of digital radio network for Law Enforcement, 2016–2019
Context
Problem and context
Multi-year infrastructure project for the deployment of TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) and VDS (Digital Video Surveillance) networks for Law Enforcement in Sicily. A mission-critical system with very strict uptime, SLA and security requirements.
Solution
Implemented solution
Field responsibility for installation, configuration and supervision of the infrastructure: TETRA base stations, fiber and microwave links, network servers, switching equipment. 24/7 on-call availability for urgent interventions on faults with operational impact on public safety communications.
Project Scope
Coverage of several Sicilian provinces with a network of TETRA base stations (BS) connected via redundant fiber and microwave links. Each site featured radio equipment, control servers, power systems with UPS and backup generators, and remote monitoring systems.
The work encompassed both the installation phase (civil works, structured cabling, equipment mounting) and the ongoing operational phase (routine maintenance, fault interventions, firmware updates, coverage verification).
Operational Aspects
The mission-critical nature of the system required rigorous procedures for every intervention: preventive change management, agreed maintenance windows, rollback plans for every change. Availability SLAs were above 99.9% on a monthly basis.
24/7 on-call availability for urgent interventions developed rapid troubleshooting capabilities on complex systems and coordination skills with Law Enforcement operational structures.
